Rutigliano (source: Visual Puglia )
On the Murgia, about 20 km from the main city of the region and about 200 metres above sea level, stands Rutigliano, the ancient Apulian settlement rich in fossil specimens from the Cretaceous period. In Piazza Cesare Battisti, one of the best-preserved medieval towers in the Bari area stands tall, mighty, and with its square base and ashlar ornament. It is believed to have been originally a part of the eleventh-century castle. Elegant ashlar decorations also enriche two palaces that line via Porta Castello. Continuing along this street, we arrive at the lovely Chiesa Madre, dedicated to St. Mary Columns and commissioned by the Norman count, Ugo, consecrated in 1108 and renovated several times over the course of centuries. The façade of the Church portrays Christ with the Apostles, sculpted on the original architrave and columns supported by the stylized lions of the Gothic ogival archivolt.
