The itinerary begins with the visit to the Grotto S. Maria degli Angeli, located below the Augustinian monastery of Cassano delle Murge. Visitors enter through a stairway into a room that with a Byzantine fresco of the Virgin with Child. The grotto was inhabited by Byzantine monks and later became a place to venerate the patron saint of the city of Cassano Murge. Inside we can see, in addition to the structure of the grotto, rocks containing prehistoric animal bones in excellent conditions and clearly visible. Even the interior of the church houses a wonderful nativity scene, all sculpted in local stone and dating back to the 16th century. A brief walk takes us to the: Valle del Nisco adjacent to the sanctuary with different prehistoric sites from the neo-Aeneolithic. The area boasts a spectacular landscape and various types of human settlements dating back to to the Copper Age. Through images and materials found on site here, it is possible to appreciate the significance of this place.

Not to be missed:
Along a walk that is easy for all (even for handicapped individuals), the young people will be guided through an interesting itinerary. First of all, a guided tour through a wooded zone and then along trails of the Murgia with breathtaking views. In particular, beginning with the outskirts of the woods, young pine grove, or recent plantings, the students can admire the itinerary that winds from one natural ravine to the ruins of old farmhouses. Crossing the wooded zones, we reach a ancient swamp inhabited by centuries-old oak trees (the oldest in this zone) marked as “great trees” by the State Forestry Corp.
