Useful informations

Constructions commissioned by Frederick in southern Italy were part of the larger plan to reorganise the Southern Kingdom, to which the Emperor had dedicated himself immediately following his return to Italy and his crowning  (1220).
The castles built under Frederick are typical in their architectural style, manifesting rigorous geometric forms. The "Castel del Monte", a foundation from Frederick's time, is erected in a dominant position in order to be to control a vast range of territories in Puglia and Basilicata, is brimming with a symbolism based on the recurrence of the number eight .
The surrounding territory, still rich in forests, was the Emperor's favourite for falcon hunting. The territory is also a natural habitat for numerous varieties of wild orchids, among which the beauty of the Ophrys is outstanding.
