Gargano, a Sailor's Paradise

From the coast between Lesina and Varano, a strip of fine sand that protrudes tongue-like into the sea, head in the direction of the efficient and protected new tourist port of Rodi Garganico. The town of Peschici is four miles from here, exquisitely perched on cliffs overlooking the sea; this charming ancient village and jet-setter's haven is a definite must-see. Heading towards Vieste the rocky coastline shelters inlet after inlet of the finest sands. Heading out with sails filled with the east wind, peaking between 11 am and late afternoon, another enchanting shore invites the visitor: the extraordinary city of Vieste. It features a well-organised port with taverns, pizzerias and restaurants nearby.
Sailing south of Vieste there is a forest flanking the coast with lush vegetation and the beach of Vigna Antica, the bay delle Zagare with its scenic stacks; take a moment to stop by grotta dei contrabbandieri with its double opening, the arches of San Felice and the Greek port, all enclosed by white cliffs and a seabed of tiny white pebbles. Have no fear of leaving Vieste in rough seas and a strong Tramontana wind; the bays of Campi and Pugnochiuso are landings safe from bad weather from the north. This astonishing and fascinating journey ends in Mattinata, a well-organised port with nautical specialists expert in all types of repairs.

Useful informations

There is a small, well-organised port in Peschici that rents fishing boats from between 1.5 metres to 3 metres in length. It is advisable to arrive during the day because the sandy shallows in front of the loading area move continually. There are excellent nautical shops in port of Peschici as well as two recovery vehicles for 40 and 10 tons for launching or for use on towpaths. Provisions can be purchased at the market held every 15 days on the second Monday of the month.
