San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia and the Cretaccio rock make up the Tremiti Islands. Located just 12 miles north of the Lesina and Varano lakes, the Tremiti are easily reached. San Domino is the largest and greenest of the three, home to wealth of sheltered coves. There are only a few landing spots and they are tricky for sailboats: on the north side of the island there is a landing protected by the Maestral wind where it is possible to stop during the night. It is sandy and rocky with a depth of 2-4 metres. San Nicola is the most accessible island: it has a 80-metre-long landing that can also be used at night. It has a rocky and sandy seabed and a depth of 2.5 metres. It can accommodate boats of up to 15 metres in length.

Not to be missed:
The Tremiti Islands are a captivating paradise, with pristine panoramas and historical remains on San Nicola. There are no landings on Capraia island from Punta dello Straccione to Cala Grange, but anchors can be dropped at Cala dei Vermi, Cala dei Pesci, Cala dei Turchi and Cala Falconetto where the crew can dive into the beautiful sea. Look out for sea urchins here; their sharp spines serve as a reminder that this is a marine reserve to love, protect and most of all treat with respect.
Useful informations
It is important to consider that stopping along the Tremiti Islands may be tricky for sailboats. Travellers must not be caught unprepared as the islands lack water, electricity and fuel. The deep, rocky seabeds make it unsafe to anchor to the bottom, especially in bad weather. To avoid this problem, anchor to mooring buoys and secure with anchor weights. It is also useful to look towards the Gargano often. During the summer, if it can be seen clearly it means there is a Maestral wind arriving; if it is hazy the Sirocco wind is spreading. It is essential to stay tuned to weather conditions on channel VHF 68 to prepare in advance for sudden occurrences of bad weather and to avoid having embay at the last minute. Along the islands repeated changes in the direction of the current marks the arrival of very rough seas. Do not hesitate to embay immediately because the sea will become very rough in about 6 – 12 hours.
