Rupestrian civilisations

This itinerary winds through the provinces of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto. The trip begins in Monopoli, visiting the rocky complex of Villa de Martino and the underground churches of S.Maria del Soccorso and S. Maria degli Amalfitani. Next, set off for Fasano, where you may admire the village of Lama d’Antico, carved out of rock, and its three frescoed churches. In San Vito dei Normanni you will visit the crypt of S. Biagio, with frescoes dating back to the 12th century.

Duration

This itinerary traverses the Murgia area and proceeds along the narrow rifts and deep troughs crossing the ravines, natural home to a number of rocky settlements. We recommend this itinerary for a two-day trip: the first day in Monopoli and Fasano, stopping overnight in San Vito dei Normanni, and the following day visiting the sites of San Vito in the morning and then moving on to Massafra and Mottola.

Not to be missed:

Castello di Monopoli
Parco Archeologico di Egnazia (Fasano)
Chiesa Madre Santa Maria della Vittoria (San Vito dei Normanni)
