Useful informations
The surface area of the Protected Seaside is 16,654 hectares with a coastline measuring about 32 km. The most interesting stretches are those of P. Cesareo – 18 km – and Nardò – 6 km - . A peculiar characteristic of these stretches is the formation of coralligenous seabeds and the numerous presence of algae, sponges, and anthozoans that enhance the sea floor with thousands of colours, making it ideal for diving and underwater photography. Numerous phenomena flourish in the waters near the coast, where there are wetlands marked by peculiar physical, biological, and ecological characteristics: marshlands and salt flats, karstic dolines known as "spunnulate". There is a wide variety of wetlands that host rare and endemic floral communities, like the "Salicornia", an edible plant used in making starters, which is plentiful in vast green carpets. Some of these biotopes are recognised as protected zones, like the Salina di Torre Colimena, an important resting ground for migratory birds. Moment that make this itinerary special are the excursion in motorboat to the Protected Seaside to study the marine ecosystem and sea floor analyses. The Seaside Park host the so-called prairie submerged under phanerogam, or highly evolved plants that moved their habitat from the land to the sea ages ago. This green prairie is contrasted by the exuberance of coralligenous floors that dominate the rocky bottom, In addition to the scientific workshops, other topics bring the student to discover a close connection between man and the sea.
