Underground Bari - Archaeological itinerary

"Art itineraries in Bari", historical and archeological itineraries, come from the common wish of some professional people to improve and to promote the knowledge of the history, the archeology and the cultural heritage of their town.
The team offers both to the concerned tourist and the educated one the chance to discover a new Bari, that can be explored in the visit to the various ancient sights, enjoyable today by the general public through routes, educationally and scientifically equipped. A specialist will guide tourists to discover the history of Bari and of the settlements following one another in the course of time.
The itinerary ends up with a taste of wines and home made products of the area.

The city of Bari has ancient origins dating back to the Bronze Age when its coasts were haunted by historic navigators of the Adriatic and Mediterranean routes. The perfect orientation of the coastline favoured the development of the settlements in the later Greek and Roman period, thereby increasing port activities. But above all, the Byzantine Era saw Bari grow in importance, to the point of becoming the residence of the Catapano - Byzantine government officials.
