Sanctuary Madonna del Belvedere

Santuario di Santa Maria di Belvedere

The Sanctuary is located 3 km from Carovigno, in a natural peaceful and relaxing landscape at 100 m altitude. The church and the ancient rupestrian settlement today are a destination for many pilgrims, who wish to worship the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary. The church, built in 1500, is currently in neoclassical style, after it was restructured in 1875 as ordered by count Alfredo Dentice, which can be read on the plaque on the façade. A system of natural caves on two levels is located under the building (1500): a long staircase composed by 47 steps links the church with the caves underneath. The staircase is composed of a compartment with barrel vault, a closed entrance on the right hand side and a little apse with frescos on the left. One of the frescos shows the Virgin Mary with the Infant. It dates back to 1530. Along the staircase there is a fresco of the Vergine del Belvedere who holds a little bird in her hand: this is the upper crypt, with a niche dating back to 1501 and commissioned by Loffreda, feudal lords of Carovigno, to the sculptor Giovanni Lombardo, from Ostuni. The access arch to this crypt shows fragments of a fresco representing the Archangel, which confirms the original toponym of the Sanctuary “S.Angelo di Luco”, as indicated on a document of 1160. The lower crypt contains two more frescos of the Virgin: the most ancient one, late 14th century, attributable to the gothic style from Siena, and the second one, located on a baroque altar, 15th century.

A Brief History:

The caves were inhabited by monks that arrived in these places from the East after the iconoclastic persecutions of 726 A.D. and spread the cult of the Virgin Mary. The image of the Virgin Mary was found at the time of the Normans (11th century). The legend tells about the miraculous healing of a man in Conversano who saw the Virgin in his dreams and was invited by her to go to the quarter of Belvedere di Carovigno in order to find her image. This happened thanks to his young heifer, who went down on her knees in front of the sacred image.

Events:

On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Saturdays after Easter the “Nzegna” takes place: a spectacular game of flags which symbolizes a young shepherd waving his coloured handkerchief when he joyfully found his heifer on her knees in front of the Virgin Mary’s image.
