Located only 2km from Andria, the Shrine of Madonna dei Miracoli, a place of worship devoted to the Marian cult since 1576, is characterized by the superimposition of three churches, built on three different levels.
The Byzantine crypt, divided into three aisles decorated with scenes from the Genesis, is the most ancient part as it dates from the 9th century. It accommodates the sacred icon of Virgin Mary placed on the altar, which is considered to be miraculous.
From here, a royal staircase leads up to the second church from the 15th century, featuring arches in polychrome marble, and beautiful decorative frescoes inside the chapel of the Crucifixion.
The upper level, built in the 18th century, is connected to the other two levels via indoor stairs. Illuminated by 13 large windows which confer it elegance and brightness, the basilica accommodates six altars in precious marble laid out along the aisles, and punctuated by Corinthian capitals. The wooden-coffered ceiling, on the other hand, terminates in a large dome, which overtops the chorus.
