The church of San Vito Martire is located along Via Cattedrale. It is particularly important because it is part of Monacelle complex. The baroque church, built during the 18th century on the remains of a previous medieval religious building, belonged to Carmelitane nuns’ convent. This is why it was named after it. Today inside the convent is the Museum of pre-classic Civilizations of southern Murgia, inaugurated in 1989. The museum comprises a specialized library, workshops and a permanent exhibition, arranged by the museum director, Mr. Donato Coppola, in the adjacent S. Vito church.
A Brief History:
The church of S. Vito Martire, 18th century, in rococo style, which is part of the Carmelitane nuns’ monastery, is not a place of worship anymore. It contains the remains of Delia, the pregnant woman who was buried around 24.000. The monastery hosts the Museum of pre-classic civilizations of southern Murgia.
Main Works:
In the near Cave of S. Angelo extremely interesting findings were made, dating back to the Pleistocene. In the Cave of San Biagio Neolithic ceramics were found, flint or bone objects, pendants and ornaments. Other extremely valuable elements were found in the Campo Boario area.
