The abbey of Santa Maria a Mare is on one of Tremiti Islands, namely the island of San Nicholas. It was built by the Benedictines but during its history it has been rearranged several times. In fact, in the 15th century, on commission by the Lateran canonicals, the original façade was replaced by the current façade in Istria stone. The portal was also replaced and today its shows relief representations of the Virgin Mary with Saints and Cherubs. From the medieval time it still perfectly preserves the rectangular system with a nave and three aisles.
