Named after the well-known 18th-century Pugliese painter, the "Corrado Giaquinto" Provincial Art Gallery, houses a collection of medieval and modern art, with Venetian paintings, Neapolitan ceramics and nativity scenes, and paintings and icons from Puglia.

The gallery is located on the top floor of Bari's Palazzo della Provincia (Provincial Palace). It enjoys splendid sea views and an enviable strategic position on the Nazario Sauro seafront, just ten minutes' walk from the train station and five minutes' from the Murat district.
The gallery, which stages temporary exhibitions alongside its permanent collections, offers a unique overview of art in Puglia from the 11th to the 19th centuries. Of particular note are a number of beautiful works by Venetian artists such as Giovanni BelliniPaolo Veronese, Jacopo Tintoretto, and members of the Vivarini family.

Other must-sees include paintings by Corrado Giaquinto and the collection of 19th century works by Giuseppe De Nittis, Francesco Netti, Domenico Morelli, and Giovanni Boldini.

  • Historical notes

The Giaquinto Picture Gallery was founded in 1928 to house paintings that were, at the time, kept in the Provincial Archaeological Museum, as well as works from churches across Puglia, donations, and acquisitions. The conspicuous collection was enhanced by the addition of a series of ceramics in 1957, and then, in the 1980s, of Cavaliere Vincenzo Simone's photographic fund and the Grieco Collection.

  • Collections

The museum houses several collections, including a selection of valuable paintings from the Venetian school of the 15th and 16th centuries. Also important is the collection of Apulian art and paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries. This sits alongside the Gallery's extensive sculpture exhibition. Works by the Neapolitan school are displayed along with the Banco di Napoli and Grieco collections, the Watercolor and Drawing Fund, and a collection dedicated to the applied arts.

  • Main artworks

The splendid, and recently restored, Polyptych by Antonio Vivarini is one of the Gallery’s major treasures. The most represented artist is the 18th-century painter Corrado Giaquinto, who has several works on show, including “The Birth of Saint John the Baptist” and “Saint Nicholas Saving the Shipwrecked.” Other highlights are the “Addolorata” by Francesco Solimena and the 19th-century landscapes by Telemaco Signorini and Giuseppe Pellizza Da Volpedo
