The Lake Salso Oasis is part of the Capitanata wetlands system, the most important in Southern Italy. The Oasis is a wetland covering 540 hectares, of great naturalistic value, formed by a series of ponds and cane thickets, located in the Municipality of Manfredonia and there are three embanked pools with a depth of between 50 and 170 cm, depending on the seasonal level and on management needs. The Oasis is inside the Gargano national park and is also part of a larger area (Site of Community Interest - SCI and Special Protection Area - SPA), more important from the naturalistic point of view and in relation to European legislation. It is therefore an important element in an area of wetlands and vast farmlands, with an exceptionally high overall naturalistic-environmental value. Much work has been done over the years, and is still in progress, aimed at preserving the most hreatened animal species existing in Apulia by implementing projects financed by the European Community (LIFE) and by the Apulia Region (POR).
