Ugento is located six kilometres from the sea and is primarily known for its marsh sites which are famous for their marsh flora typical of brackish water habitats. The Ugento wood, also called Roccacapozza, along with the coastal pools and dunes, makes the coast a unique ecological complex.
Activities:
The area of shoals is interesting and easy to reach even for beginning scuba divers, since the maximum depth of the shoals is not more than 10 metres. Better equipped scuba divers can venture off to explore the wreck called Liesen by the locals who read this name on one of the visible doors of the vessel.
Coast Type:
The coastline is characterised by the presence of numerous shoals which can be seen in the stretch that extends for three kilometres from the area called I Pali to Torre Mozza ending at the rocks known as Cavallo and Sciumenta. The shoals are dangerous for navigation, but they are of great interest to scuba divers. The chiriche are also interesting: small rocks given this name by the local fishermen due to their similarity to the tonsures (chierica in Italian) of priests due to the flat empty centre surrounded by tufts of seaweed.
