Famous since ancient times for its sulphurous waters, Santa Cesarea Terme became a popular seaside resort in the 1920’s. Characterised by a typical early 20th century architecture, with Art Nouveau and Moorish buildings, Santa Cesarea is located to the south of Otranto, along a cliff over the sea, at the top of a barren plateau. Amidst the original villas, early 20th century summer homes of Salento’s upper class and nobility, the Villa Sticchi, in Moorish style, stands out; it was built at the end of the 1800’s. The top part of the town enjoys an endless view of the Salento coast, to the tip of Santa Maria di Leuca.
Activities:
Fitness, beauty and relaxation are the key words for those who want to spend a holiday at Santa Cesarea Terme. Located in a particularly favourable position, surrounds by artistic wonders and historically important sites, here it is possible to re-establish a contact with mother nature and dedicate some time to yourself. A day at the beach can follow treatments with thermal waters, mud, massages and beauty and anti-stress treatments.
Coast Type:
The pretty stretch of coast where Santa Cesarea Terme is located is primarily famous for its thermal baths, waters containing sodium chloride and iodide and sulphur which spring from four natural grottos connected to the sea. Legend has it that these waters sprung from the bodies of the Leuterni giants killed by Hercules. The rocky coast offers picturesque large rocks and prehistoric grottos; one of the most beautiful sights is the cove of Porto Miggiano reached by a steep staircase and where it is possible to see a 15th century Tower.
