Gallipoli is very famous for its clean sea and sandy beaches. The windy sea makes it possible to practice water sports so much so that the sea in front of Gallipoli is the site of international sailing races. Beach lovers can enjoy the fine sand of Lido San Giovanni, two kilometres south of the town, characterised by a gently sloping sea floor, and thus particularly suited for families and children. At Le Conchiglie beach to the north it is possible to go spear fishing and water-skiing.
Activities:
From May to October diving off Gallipoli is recommended including for nighttime dives to see the sea floor and grottos. It is possible to dive as well as take courses to obtain a licence. There are many spots for diving, the most interesting include Isola di S. Andrea, Giardino delle Gorgonie and Secca di Ponente. The lush sea floor of Gallipoli offers sea fauna and flora, but for those who are more expert there is the possibility of exploring wrecks of warships like Torre in Serraglio. A diving course was recently started for the blind, with a programme aimed at creating an educational, cultural and perceptive experience.
Coast Type:
Gallipoli’s beaches are mostly sandy and full of vegetation; in addition to resorts it is possible to rent villas located a few metres from the sea.
