Woodworking, especially of olive and olive root wood, for creating furniture, housewares, and tools, has very old origins. Handmade cabinetmaking is thriving in Puglia, having aimed at a compromise between tradition and contemporary taste. Having freed themselves from the practical function of the object, handmade creations are now the fruit of the imagination of inlayers, who have maximized their potential by painting on and with wood. Olive is the wood they prefer, being fragrant, knotty, and pleasing to the touch when being worked. The master woodworkers now dedicate their efforts to a wide and varied range of products: the art of carving, inlaying and cabinetmaking have created, over the years, highly refined creations for both interior furnishing and the decoration of churches and palaces. Having surpassed the plain domestic or rural carpentry of Salento, today's cabinetmaker is both a craftsman and artist, perfecting his art of inlaying and decoration, demonstrating highly original taste and extraordinary accuracy that has made this art the pride of the entire territory.
