In Puglia, as in other areas dominated by agriculture, for centuries smiths played a "functional" role, producing tools and equipment used in farming and related trades. The use of wrought iron to strengthen and beautify palaces and churches arose only later, giving rise to the current tradition of Puglia's wrought iron tradition that can still be seen today. On a regional panorama, some zones are renowned for the quality of the products: in the area of Foggia, Mattinata and Cerignola are known for mostly domestic products and knick-knacks; in the area of Bari, instead, Gravina in Puglia is specialised in the creation of artistic objects and small statues; the Salento region, where craftsmen were strongly influenced by Baroque tradition, is best known for elaborate candle holders, lamps, and grates. Even today, wrought iron has found a variety of uses, from the decoration and designs of the façades of many aristocratic palaces to true works of art like candelabras, lamps, bed headboards, grates, and railings.
