Palazzo De Angelis in Altamura, considered one of the best examples of “casa a corte” (typical group of houses in Puglia having a common courtyard), is located near Porta Bari, which has kept for centuries the stories of noble families.
The palace was built at the beginning of the 16th century, as indicated by the coat of arms of Farnese family and by that of De Angelis family, but the building has been radically changed over the time. The ground and the noble floor, the portal with columns and the gable with the coat of arms of De Angelis family belong to the original building, as well as the internal loggia, with stone columns which bear small cross-shaped vaults, which marked the entrance to the magnificent hall.
Between the 17th and the 18th century, the façade on the north of the square piazza Unità d’Italia and the entrance gate to the town have been changed, while the second floor was finished, giving the palace the nowadays appearance.
Some research shows that, at the beginning of the 15th century, the Del Balzo family, feudatory of Altamura, wanted to build its house next to Porta Bari. This house is the nowadays Palazzo Viti.
At the beginning of the XV century, the Del Balzo family was probably the feudal family of Altamura. In that period, they built near Porta Bari their palace, nowadays identified with the present Palazzo Viti.
