Masseria I Monti – Santa Maria di Barsento

In the ancient hamlet of Barsentum, between Noci and Putignanostand the Masseria I Monti and the adjoining small church of Santa Maria di Basento, a complex of extraordinary fascination which bears witness to the long and continuous occupations of the area.
The masseria dates back to the 16th century, although recent restoration works have brought to light much older architectural structures: the 12th-century lancet and round arches are thought to belong to a monastic settlement attached to the nearby church, a place considered an extraordinary example of ante litteram Romanesque architecture.
Built between the 11th and the 12th century, the small temple features a single-spire façade preceded by a prothyrum, while the interior is divided into three nave supporting barrel vaults. The roof slopes are clad with small juxtaposed and self-supporting stone slabs, a characteristic method of civil building widely used throughout the centuries in the construction of the trulli and the countless rural dry-stone structures.
