An ancient farm dating back to the 16th century, the Masseria Jesce in Altamura is located in the proximity of the ancient Appian way.
Consisting of a single block, it shows traces of fortification works in the elevated sentry boxes, with spaces arranged on two main floors. The ground floor rooms, housing the stables and the cabins used for the storage of farm tools, are arranged on different levels due to the unevenness of the terrain, while the main floor serving residential purposes, features ample rooms, among which a lunette-vaulted living room.
In the proximity of the masseria one can admire a rock settlement, with caves laid out in the shape of an amphitheater, among which stands out a frescoed crypt. Dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, the crypt is decorated with frescoes dating from the half of the 14th century, among which a deesis attributed to Giovanni da Taranto, as well as a series of wall paintings depicting episodes from the Marian cycle, created by Didaco de Simone in the 17th century.
