Dating back to 18th century, the Macurano agricultural complex was erected on the high plains of Alessano, not far from the small town of Montesardo. It owes its name to the nearby cave settlement of Macurano, a small underground village that most likely dates back to the 8th century and is characterised by the presence of grottos used for worship and an interesting rural system of underground olive presses, roads, and canal works. Not far away, the Masseria Macurano complex consists of group of several buildings around an impressive two-storey tower-like structure that was once used for defensive purposes. All around are the structures once used for sheltering animals and storing grain and tobacco, including a stall, a wood oven, sheepfolds, and a delightful Mediterranean garden enclosed by ancient Messapian wall. High defensive wall in stone, red earth, and blocks of calcareous tuff circle the entire complex and the vast countryside estate.
