Masseria Giampaolo is one of the 16 farmhouses within the ancient feud of the abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate in Casalabate. Build in the 16th century, the farmouse tower is a mighty fortified structure on two floors and is equipped wtih machicolations and a stone bridge used in the past a a drawbridge. Inside, the cross-vaulted ceilings and elegant fireplaces still adorn each room. The marks left by the wagon wheels inside the large courtyard and the two underground olive presses that can be seen even today document the agricultural vocation of the complex that, as early as the 17th century and under the name of “GioPaulo”, must have had a vast enclosure that reached beyond the building-tower, as well as earthen huts, cabins, a well, shelters sculpted in rock amidst olive groves, un palombaro, two gardens, an oven, and a mill.
