Located in the countryside of Surbo, not far from the medieval abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate, the Masseria Melcarne farmhouse is an ancient, fortified tower-farmhouse that was later transformed into an elegant noble residence. Costructed between the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th centuries to defend the lowland countryside coastal invasion, as can still be seen today by the ancient machicolations along the outer faces, the tower was originally intended for productive activities with rooms destined for dwellings for farmhands, raising animals, and the processing of agricultural crops. During the 18th century, the farmhouse underwent significant remodeling that definitively changed the way it was used. Two elegant balconies supported by sturdy consoles were added. The structure was completed by two square-shaped dovecots located to the side of the tower.
