La Vela Marsh

This marsh is located next to the promontory known as ‘Il Fronte’, at the end of the natural channel called Capo D'Ayala, covered with the Fucarino pinewood
The marsh, surrounded by this pinewood, is a perfect habitat for resident and migratory bird species thanks to its lush halophytes. However, its vegetation is undergoing degeneration at present due to the proximity of brackish water.

This reserve satisfies the feeding needs of many animals: limicolous species looking for food in the mud or on the shores (0-50 cm deep areas), species living in shallow waters (up to 50 cm) and species searching for food in deeper waters (over 50 cm). Some of them are characteristic of wetlands, while others are spotted only occasionally. The typical plants of such an environment consist of halophyte vegetation, in other words species adapted to living in a saline environment, following the flow of the tide of the Mar Piccolo (meaning ‘Small Sea’).
