Bosco delle Pianelle (Pianelle Forest)
The Pianelle Forest nature reserve is spread over 1,205 hectares in the Martina Franca area and on the outskirts of the Crispiano and Massafra municipalities.
The area, a hide-out for bandits in the 1800s, is particularly recommended for those wishing to take their families on a trip and relax among the greenery, and also for sport and nature enthusiasts.
One attraction is the large number of mammal species (such as weasels, badgers and foxes) and the diversity of plants (such as juniper, myrtle, medlar trees and wild orchids) living in the Pianelle Forest reserve.
In the forest, visitors can also walk or cycle along more than 15 kilometres of specially prepared paths or pause at one of the picnic areas provided within the reserve.
The entrance to the reserve is at the 15th kilometre of the main road from Martina Franca to Massafra, where the tourist information board is easily visible at the right hand side of the entrance to the park. On the left, the other entrance takes visitors straight to the house of the park keeper who is available to provide additional useful information.
