Foce Varano
A number of tree species flourish in this reserve, especially holm oaks and beeches. The latter stretch over areas at such a low altitude that their woods are referred to as ‘depressed beech woods’. As altitude declines, down to 250 metres above sea level, beeches are so healthy and majestic that one wonders how it can be possible as they live in a very sunny and dry environment; the secrets of their luxuriance are the special microclimate, their position and the prevailing winds that ensure the humidity they need. As far as animals are concerned, this reserve is home to mammals (like wild cats and roe deer) and birds, especially passerines, birds of prey and woodpeckers.
