Monte Barone Nature Reserve covers 124 hectares on the southern part of Gargano promontory, in the province of Foggia, with an Aleppo pine forest.
The understory, with holm oaks and several other species of trees and shrubs of the Mediterranean scrub, such as the pistacia lentiscus, the phyllirea, the oleaster and the rosemary, is rich and thick and offers shelter to hares, hedgehogs, foxes and badgers. Amid the branches, instead, fly pigeons, turtle doves, blackbirds and several species of finches and birds belonging to Paridae family.
In the clearings, there are garrigue and steppe –like areas with herbaceous plants, while here and there appear interesting rock habitats.
