The Nature Reserve “Murge Orientali”, owned by the State, covers almost 733 hectares in the area of Martina Franca and Massafra.

The environment is characterised by the Murgia, with calcareous and outcropping rocks and pieces of lands created with them. The vegetation is characterised by coppice forests of Macedonian oaks, enhanced by the scented Mediterranean scrub.

The reserve has been created to protect some mammalians which live in the area and houses wild boars, foxes, hedgehogs, stone martens and hares. Amid the branches instead, fly many birds such as the robin, the golden oriole, the goldfinch and the hoopoe.

There are 150 ravines inside the reserve, among which the Gravina Madonna della Scala stands out in the Municipality of Massafra. Besides a large rocky village of the Middle Ages, inside it there are also more than 600 plant species.
