The reserves along the Eastern coast in the Province of Taranto can be divided into two local areas: the former stretches from the Cuturi and Rosa Marina woods to the coast where the Chidro river flows into the sea, while the latter includes the coastal salt pans and dunes of Torre Colimena, the Conte marsh and its coastal dunes. Cuturi and Rosa Marina woods are made up of portions of tall holm oak wood and maquis. The Chidro river is a stream with a large bed supplied by a karst spring. The salt pans of Torre Colimena are located in a low-lying wetland area behind the dunes and they are home to halophyte glasswort and dune plants like Juniperus oxycedrus and Juniperus phoenicea. This wetland is an important site for migratory aquatic species. The innermost area is covered with Quercus ilex and Mediterranean maquis, including myrtles (Myrtus communis) and mastics (Pistacia lentiscus). Mediterranean salt steppes, dunes with junipers and marram grass dominate along the coast.
