In the heart of Gargano National Park, the Riserva degli Sfilzi (Sfilzi Reserve) is a forest of almost 56 hectares in the north of the impressive Umbra Forest. It is located along the slopes of Carpinosa Valley, almost 395 metres above sea level.
In the reserve, where the water of the Sfilzi fountain gushes, the only perennial source of water in the hilly and mountain area of Gargano promontory, the visitors can admire plants such as beech trees, Turkey oaks and maples and observe some animals like wildcats and blackbirds.
The unique environment has a habitat which was typical in the Mediterranean area during the prehistory and has almost disappeared. The reserve, since it has a rare ecosystem, can be entered only upon authorization and only for scientific and educational purposes.
