The Regional Nature Park Isola di Sant’Andrea e Litorale di Punta Pizzo (Sant’Andrea Island of Punta Pizzo Coastline), along the Ionian coastline of Salento, covers the area of the Municipality of Gallipoli.
The Island of Sant’Andrea, right in front of Gallipoli, boasts the presence of the unique colony of nesting Audouins’ gull along the coast of the Adriatic and Ionian Sea in Italy.
The coastline of Punta Pizzo, instead, boasts an interesting mosaic in nature, with beaches, Mediterranean scrub, Mediterranean steppe-like vegetation, wetlands and marshes.
Since there is such a variety of habitats, there are several species of plants, from the strawberry tree to the spiny broom, from the myrtle to the pistacia lentiscus, from the rosemary to the thyme, as far as the rare orchids and the calendula.
Nearby the wetlands, such as Li Foggi canal, instead, it is possible to catch sight of the colours of the water animals, among which stands out the black-winged stilt.
