San Giovanni Rotondo

San Giovanni Rotondo

Solidly tied to the figure of Padre Pio, San Giovanni Rotondo actually has a history which is much older than that of the monk proclaimed a saint in 2002 with the name Saint Pius of Pietrelcina. The town, which extends in a valley in Gargano National Park, was officially founded in 1095, but its territory was the site of settlements as early as the Neolithic Age. Its name comes from the presence of an ancient round temple, dating from the 2nd century BC, dedicated first to the pagan god Janus and then consecrated to Saint John the Baptist. A royal city under the Swabians, it suffered the dominations of the Angevins, Aragonese, Spaniards and Bourbons and was sacked various times primarily in the wars between the Spaniards and French. The figure of Padre Pio, the presence of his remains and the places where he lived and died, as well as the hospital complex Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza he wanted, currently permeate the entire life of the city, drawing crowds of pilgrims and visitors.

The oldest part of San Giovanni Rotondo reveals charming spots for those who venture into the alleys of the historical centre, which still preserves traces of the Swabian-Anjou period. Traces of the towers from Frederick II’s time can be seen along the walls. There are many Churches: the oldest is San Giovanni Battista, from which the city gets its name, more recent ones include the new Chiesa di Padre Pio, next to the hospital, designed by the architect Renzo Piano. Other interesting churches include the Chiesa di Sant’Onofrio, built in the 13th century, and the churches of Santa Caterina (12th century), San Donato (14th century), Madonna di Loreto (16th century) S. Orsola (17th century) and San Leonardo (17th century). Lastly, there are the places tied to the figure of Padre Pio: The sixteenth century Convento dei Frati Minori Cappuccini, with the cell where the monk lived from 1916 until his death on 23 September 1968; the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Padre Pio received the stigmata on Good Friday in 1918 while he was praying in front of a cross, which is conserved here; the Saint’s Tomb; and the monumental Way of the Cross, inaugurated in 1971, with bronze stations created by the sculptor Francesco Messina.
