It is one of the oldest events in the world and represents a very important socio-cultural moment for Putignano citizens. This is one of the oldest and longest carnivals in the world: some researchers have found records dating the event back to 26 December 1394, during the solemn transfer of St. Stephen Protomartyr's Holy Relics from Monopoli to Putignano. Like all the other Carnivals, it ends on Shrove Tuesday, but it starts on the 26 December with the multi-centennial tradition of the Propaggine, during which groups of extemporary poets recite in the vernacular satirical and pungent verses addressed at the local government and most known figures. The figure that represents the Carnival is Farinella, whose costume made of multicoloured patches with bells sewn on the tips of the hat and other bells on the shoes and collar looks like that of a joker. The principal attraction of the Carnival is the parade of floats with their satire on manners, carnival allegories and playful masked groups.
Not to be missed:
All the Thursdays during the Carnival period are addressed to different categories, such as nuns, monsignors and priests, widowers/widows and the mad (unmarried young people), married women, cuckolds (married men), etc. Touring, dancing and music shows are organized for all these groups,
