Anniversary of the Death of Padre Pio

Padre Pio (Adda Editore)

The Gargano area is not only a favourite destination for lovers of the sea and pristine nature, but also one of the most famous religious destinations in Italy. There are two locations of major interest for visiting pilgrims: San Giovanni Rotondo and Monte Sant’ Angelo. San Giovanni Rotondo has always been an age-old land of passage; waves of pilgrims, however, began with the arrival of Padre Pio. It was 1916 when the saint appeared in San Giovanni. Thanks to his presence and constant, untiring dedication, this city in the Gargano area underwent a remarkable evolution. In fact, Padre Pio was committed to the construction of numerous public works.  One that particularly stands out is the “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza“, a large hospital for the care of many patients from all over Italy. Visiting San Giovanni Rotondo is a unique opportunity to retrace the outstanding events in the life of the Saint. During the month of September, two dates are dedicated to him: the 20th and the 23rd. September 20th of each year marks the festival of the city of San Giovanni Rotondo when its citizens recall the moment of the presentation of the key of the city to the beloved priest from Pietrelcina. September 23rd, instead, marks the anniversary of his death.
