In the past, the towers, which are all located in the old town centre of Marittima, enclosed the few existing houses and transformed the village into a small fortalice. The tower dedicated to Francesca Antonia Baldassarra was built in the sixteenth century and consists of a single quasi-square room with the ancient in-arrow slits and machicolations still visible up high. All the towers were built with the support of the University and private individuals.
