During the first weekend in September Brindisi celebrates its patron saints: Teodoro d'Amasea and Lorenzo da Brindisi. The procession in the sea is very picturesque and sees the statues and relics of the saints move along the whole inner harbour on boats until they reach the central piers, from where a procession leads the saints to the Cathedral. The event is meant to celebrate a miracle: in 1210 the sailors who transported the relics of Teodoro were hunted by Turkish ships and decided to save the relics on a sandalo (a boat with a flat bottom) which, pushed by the current, reached the entrance of the harbour. The procession takes place within the feat of the patron saint, with artistic light shows and fireworks.
