A procession by torchlight is held in honour of the Saint. The day of the feast, people are used to eating donkey meatballs because the Saint was called “brother donkey” for his poverty.

St. Joseph of Copertino was born in 1603. He became a Franciscan monk and was ordained priest. His life was full of mystical phenomena: prophecies, miracles and famous cases of levitations. The Saint exercised the office at the sanctuary of Maria SS della Grottella in Copertino. In that period, people saw him fly from the door of the Altar of the Virgin or other altars many times.
