Historical Procession of Frederick II and the Tournament of the Rioni

Torneo dei Rioni

The Procession of Frederick II represents the most important medieval re-enactment from the era of Frederick. More than four hundred participants in period costumes parade along the main streets of the city that have been lavishly decorated with the standards of the four 'rioni' - or quarters, to conclude in Piazza Manfredi, where the herald will read the Emperor's decree. In the Torneo dei Rioni, set for the following day, the athletes and knights of each rione will face off in difficult medieval-style games to win the Palio .- or Prize. To win, the rione must score the most points during the five competitions (battering ram, wine casks, safe, the bridge event, speed, and dexterity).

Curios:

The tournament is a real show of colours and emotions sponsored by the Republic Presidency. Moreover, for the last few years it has been linked to a national lottery, also thanks to the twinning with the two Frederick II’s towns of Jesi and Palermo.

Event History:

The tournament of the districts derives from the proclamation Emperor Frederick II wanted to release in 1225 during his stay in Oria. Athletes and knights belonging to the four districts of the town compete in the hard trials to win the much-desired “Palio”.
