In the squares, in the castle moat, along the streets, Barletta revives the atmosphere of 1503, when Italian knights under the leadership of Ettore Fieramosca defeated the French troops of La Motte. The famous historic event that saw the Italians victorious during a period of Spanish and French domination in southern Italy, is still today a source of pride for the local population, who organise a costumed replica each year. For the event, Barletta is decked out in Spanish standards, shields and torches that illuminate the narrow streets of the historic centre. Famous actors often participate in the celebration, taking on the roles of legendary warriors: Danny Quinn, Clarissa Burt, Arnoldo Foà and others.
