Located a few kilometres from the sea, on the ancient road between Bari and Brindisi, the Egnazia Archaeological Park safeguards many artefacts from the ancient city of Gnathia, near Fasano.
The history of the excavations starts in the early 19th century when French officers plundered the site. Later, during the historic famine of 1846, the town’s inhabitants looted the ancient tombs of vases, precious objects, and grave goods to sell. It wasn’t until 1912 that systematic excavation work began. They continued intermittently in the 1940s, then again from the ‘60s to the ‘80s, and are ongoing today.
Near the site, outside the walls, is an Archaeological Museum.
Outside the city walls, visitors can admire artefacts found in the necropolis, including grave goods and painted vases in a style known as Egnazia pottery. At the foot of the acropolis, you'll find porticos, a secular basilica, a sacellum (shrine) dedicated to Oriental divinities, an amphitheatre, and a forum, while private dwellings are located on the other side of Via Traiana.
Both the Archaeological Park and the museum can be reached by taking the State Highway (S.S.) 379, and turn off at the Fasano-Savelletri exit. The site entrance is on the Monopoli-Savelletri coastal road.
The museum safeguards artefacts that have survived more than thirty centuries of history. Its exhibits, which date from the Bronze Age, the Roman era, and the Early Middle Ages, when the town was an episcopal see, take you back in time, on a journey through the various phases of the city’s past.
