The Roman Amphitheatre dates back to the I century B.C. and is one of the oldest in Southern Italy. It was built in honour of the colony of Lucera and Caesar August, probably the first amphitheatre dedicated to the Emperor, by the tribune Marcus Vecilius Campus, as reported by the epigraph on the architrave of one of the entrance to the cavea. The amphitheatre, constructed on an elliptical plan, stands out for its considerable dimensions which are evidence of the importance of the town, rich capital of the region of Daunia and military citadel. The arena is located at 9 metres under the ground level and is delimited by a hip canal, with a system of carceres, that is caves used to keep wild animals.
