  • Ph. Mirabilia Sistemi
    null

The city of Egnazia, a lively centre during Roman period and a strategic point for trade and commerce thanks to the nearby port, was built on the ruins of the ancient Gnathia, dating back to the Bronze Age, and nowadays it one of the most important archaeological site in the region, licked by the sea.

During the Roman period, the city of Egnazia was crossed by the Trajan Way, of which it is still possible to see the tracks. Also the forum and the so-called amphitheatre , probably used not for shows, but as squares of the forum,  now used as market square,  date back to Roman period.

The Basilica civile, with the Aula delle Tre Grazie, the two Early-Christian Basilicas, the Sacellum of the eastern Gods and the well-preserved cryptoporticus date back to Roman period, too.
