Lucera

Lucera

The history of this city is lost in obscurity, located 18 km from Foggia and a short distance from the Subappenines and Gargano , situated on three hills which dominate the view over the plains of the Tavoliere. The archaeological artefacts date back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age, and to Greek, Dauna, Sannite and Roman epochs. The latter was a golden age for the city, it became a colony under Roman law with wide-reaching independence and privileges. Seat of the “catapano” (captaincy) under the Normans, its maximum period of splendour arrived with Frederick II, who transferred 60,000 Saracens here who had been deported from Sicily between 1222 and 1223. They created a Muslim centre with mosques and harems, later destroyed by the Angevins in 1266. Under the new domination the city became the capital of Capitanata and Contado del Molise and remained as such until the beginning of the 19th century. Traces of this long history remain in the monuments and traditions of Lucera, such as the Historical parade held in August.

The splendid historical centre of Lucera is home to numerous monuments, churches and aristocratic buildings, to discover walking through its age-old streets. The heart of the city is Piazza Duomo, where the cathedral dedicated to the patron S. Maria dell’Assunta stands. It was built in 1300 by Charles II of Anjou, after the victory over the Saracens, most likely on the ruins of a mosque. The same Charles of Anjou had the Sanctuary church of San Francesco built in honour of the saint from Assisi, which contains the remains of San Francesco Fasani, a native of Lucera canonized in 1986. Other churches worth visiting in the centre include: San Domenico, S. Antonio Abate, Santa Caterina and Chiesa del Carmine. But the construction which first catches the visitor’s eye is the Castle, the Swabian-Anjou fortress which stands on Monte Albano, the highest hill of Lucera. The walls which extend 900 meters with 22 watchtowers, was built by Charles I of Anjou and contains the remains of the pre-existing imperial Palatium of Frederick II (1233). An amphitheatre remains from the Roman period on the eastern edge of the city. Lastly, the city’s “Garibaldi” theatre, which was recently restored, is truly beautiful.
