Torre Santa Susanna is a small town located inland between Brinsidi, Taranto and Lecce. Its origins go back to the Messapians, who built a Turris Massapiorum where the city is today. This was a turreted construction with a granary used for the defence and storage of food supplies for the nearby city of Oria. The conversion of the place from Turris Messapiorum to Torre Santa Susanna took place in the 13th century, when the inhabitants of close-by farmsteads flocked into what is the residential quarter today. Abundant archaeological documentation testifies to the existence of numerous residential settlements in the districts of Crepacore, Tubiano, San Giacomo, Galesano, Guidone, Torre Mozza, Campofreddo, Malvindi and Palombara.
