Francavilla Fontana

Francavilla Fontana (APT)

Founded around the year 1300 after a legendary apparition of the Madonna, Francavilla Fontana, or the "Town of the Imperials", is located between the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto, near Ceglie Messapica and Manduria. Its century-old history is worthily witnessed by the fine Castle of the enlightened Imperial Princes, today the town hall, with a magnificent balcony on the well-preserved and finely sculpted façade, and the many churches, among which worthwhile mentioning are the Matrix Church and the superb Church of the Liguorini Fathers.

Not to be missedexpand/compress

The typical Medieval structure of the town is still clearly visible in the arcades overlooking Piazza Umberto I.  Chiesa Madre is a very fine church built in the typical Salento Baroque style and another interesting structure is the Arco dei Cappuccini (Capuchins’ Arch), the old main street of the town, with the Capuchins’ Church, built in sober Baroque style. The Saint Spirit Church is another fine Baroque building and the Church of Santa Chiara is neoclassic in style. Do not miss the picturesque Saint Week’s procession that lasts all night long and is concluded the next morning.
