Serracapriola

Serracapriola

Serracapriola is a small municipality located in the National Gargano Park near Chieuti and rather close to the Lesina Lake. The first documentary evidence of its history dates back to 1038 and regards the donation of the village by Emperor Conrad to the Abbey of S. Sofia in Benevento.
In the subsequent centuries it was a feud rules by a sequence of noble families including the Sforza, the Guevara, the D’Avalos, and eventually the Maresca, who got hold of the feud in 1742 and are still today the owners of a significant portion of land.

A visit to the Capuchin Driars’ Convent can be interesting: built in 1536 by Princess Andronica Del Balzo, it is the place where Padre Pio (Father Pius) from Pietralcina studied theology. The cell where the friar lived was used as a chapel already in 1976. The church inside is dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, portrayed in a valuable painting of 1534.
There is also a worthwhile visiting necropolis dating back to the VI-V centuries b.C. in the surroundings of the village.
