San Severo is located in the northern Tavoliere and is a renowned art town. According to the local legend, it was founded by the Greek hero Diomedes with the name of Castrum Drionis. The area where it lies corresponds to the ancient Daunia; in fact, Neolithic settlement finds have been dug out of its underground. Between the Lombard and the Byzantium age, Benedictine monasticism spread, taking with it the cult of Saint Severinus, Apostle. In the XVI century, the town was the seat of the Governor of the province of Capitanata and Molise, as well as of the court of Royal Hearing. Following the Pity prodigy in 1557, the Mercy Church was built and subsequently enlarged by the Brotherhood of Death. On July 30, 1627, the church was almost totally destroyed by an earthquake. An exquisite local wine is produced in the San Severo area.
