Ischitella is on Gargano’s promontory at an altitude of around three hundred metres. The town is in an area rich in springs and its inhabitants enjoy a stunning view spanning lake Varano, the Tremiti islands and, on a particularly clear day, the Croatian and Abruzzo coastline. The town’s historical roots date back to the disappearance of Uria, whose inhabitants took refuge in the area of Ischitella, founding the first nucleus of habitations. The first records of Ischitella as a town date from 970 AC when Ottone I apparently freed the town from the Muslims camping outside its walls. Under the Norman and Swabian rule, Ischitella was part of the Caserta county, but during the subsequent Angevin and Aragonese rule it was owned by nobles, the last of whom was Giovanni D’Angiò, the brother of King Robert, who donated the town to Agnese of Perigord, the lady whose immense beauty inspired Bocaccio in his Decameron.
